Think You Don’t Like Tea? You Might Be Making These Mistakes!

If you’ve ever said, “I just don’t like tea,” there’s a good chance you haven’t had it prepared the right way! Whether it was too bitter, too weak, or just plain bland, the problem isn’t the tea itself—it’s how it was brewed. In this guide, we’ll break down common tea-making mistakes and how to fix them, plus share a few foolproof tea recommendations to help you fall in love with the perfect cup.

1. Water Temperature Matters

Not all teas should be brewed with boiling water!

  • Black & Herbal Teas: Use near-boiling water (200–212°F).
  • Green & White Teas: Use lower temperatures (160–180°F) to avoid bitterness.
  • Oolong Teas: Best at 185–200°F for a smooth, balanced flavor.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have a tea kettle that measures temperature, let boiling water cool for 2-3 minutes before brewing delicate teas.

2. Steeping Time Can Make or Break Your Tea

Leaving your tea bag or leaves in too long? That’s a fast track to bitterness.

  • Black Tea: 3–5 minutes
  • Green Tea: 1–3 minutes
  • Herbal Tea: 5–7 minutes
  • Oolong Tea: 4–7 minutes

Pro Tip: If your tea is too bitter, try reducing steeping time rather than adding sugar.

3. The Right Tea-to-Water Ratio

  • Too little tea? Weak and watery.
  • Too much? Overpowering and unpleasant.
Use 1 teaspoon of loose-leaf tea per cup (or one tea bag per 8 oz.).

Pro Tip: Stronger tea doesn’t mean using more leaves—try a longer steep time instead.

4. Ditch the Low-Quality Tea Bags

Grocery store tea bags are often filled with tea dust—the lowest-quality tea particles. Switching to loose-leaf tea or pyramid-style sachets gives you better flavor and aroma.

Pro Tip: A simple tea infuser or non bleached tea bags (like we sell at the shop) makes loose-leaf tea just as easy as bagged tea!

5. Experiment with Add-Ins and Cold Brews

If you’ve only tried plain black tea, there’s a whole world of flavors waiting for you!

  • For a smoother taste: Add honey, lemon, or cinnamon.
  • For a creamier experience: Try milk, creamer or a tea latte.
  • For a refreshing twist: Brew your tea cold! Steep it in the fridge for 6–12 hours.
  • For old fashioned fun: Brew in the Sun! Some flavors like Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Raspberry, Peach, Jasmine, Mint Green, Hibiscus, Chamomile,  & Fruity Blends do wonderful in the sun!  Use a glass jar, steep for 3-4 hours in direct sunlight, sweeten to your liking (honey, agave or even add fruit slices are healthiest) and ENJOY!

Final Thoughts: There’s a Tea for Everyone!

If you’ve given up on tea before, give it one more shot—but this time, brew it right! Start with a high-quality loose-leaf tea, mind your steeping time, and experiment with flavors. You might just find your new favorite drink.

☕ Not sure where to start? Try a fun fruity herbal tea, a creamy chai made with milk or dairy alternative of your choosing, or a smooth and sexy oolong!
